Can anyone suggest a good store in the greater Chicago or greater Milwaukee area that might have a used bass Trombone at a reasonable price? A friend and protégé of mine just started grad school at Northern Illinois and he needs to buy a bass trombone to use playing in the jazz ensemble. preferably something in good shape, but at a pretty reasonable price. Double rotor horn preferred.

You might want to include Rockford, IL in your search. Rockford is a decent sized city, not far from DeKalb, where NIU is located.

My go to is Horn Stash in Palatine, IL (about an hour away from Dekalb). I also live 5 min away from them and have built a decent rapport with them since I've sent a few students there to upgrade horns. But I will admit their tenor selection is almost always better than their bass trombone selection. Their bass bone selection has a tendency to be odd horns. And they only currently have one horn on consignment.

Also, does NIU not have a bass trombone they can lend out to students? Or even borrow one from a professor until he is able to track down a horn. I'll reach out to some of my students and alumni at DePaul to see if they're selling any bass bones.

If he’s interested in driving 4 hours to St. Louis, Doug Bert has several on his brass exchange website.

This is definitely the spot! Website is easy to navigate too, and they seem to get new stuff regularly.
