I have been notified by the family of Stephen Norrell, bass trombonist of the Metropolitan Opera from 1981-2018 and teacher to countless students as a private teacher and as faculty member of Manhattan School of Music, that he passed away this morning.

Steve was a classmate of mine at Juilliard. So sorry to hear this news. He was a character, but also an incredible player even back then. He had a serious work ethic - he earned his position in the orchestral world through serious time in the practice room.

RIP Steve.

I heard him at Teton festival playing Mahler 6 in 2013, my first live Mahler. Rest in peace.

I had the honor of getting to know him at the end of his Met career and learned more from him in a handful of hours than in a decade before … his impact on our community is immeasurable. Condolences to his family.

This is definitely a big loss. Living in NJ, I have played with many who knew him. A great person and a great player.
