I'm currently playing a Warburton 8M mouthpiece on my alto trombone. I have 2 different backbores. One is the normal T backbore and the other is a T star backbore. I like the T star backbore more. I have the impression that the airflow is easier to control. Any thoughts or similar experiences? The Warburton website says:

- The T* (STAR) series is the same as the T series except that there is no cylindrical section.

- The T* models are somewhat more free blowing than the standard models.

I tried both T3 and T3* and T4 and T4* backbores with the 8M and 10M and D tops, and I also thought the blow of the * versions was more open and free blowing, but I ended up preferring the more centred tone of the standard versions. They seemed to be easier to hear in a section and project a little better, for me.

I prefer the * backbores to the standard ones myself. Not sure if they are more free blowing but they work great for me. I wouldn’t get caught up with website descriptions either. If it works for you don’t question it. All that matters is that it feels comfortable even if your impression is different than what the website may imply.
