Who else out there besides me uses an aftermarket mouthpiece on their Olds? Doug Elliot makes it easy with custom size shanks but what if you want to use another brand? (blasphemy l know) What other kinds are Olds devotees playing on? Do you just let it stick out?

I use Doug Elliott for small-bore Olds - everything else [except for Olds mouthpieces, which don't work very well for me] "sticks out."

For my large-bore O-25 I usually use an Olds G or Olds 20, but have found that some large-shank Yamaha mouthpieces fit the receiver pretty well. Are Yamaha shanks non- standard?

Conn 3. Years ago my tech reamed the receiver on my Olds Studio a little bit (speaking of blasphemy), as more could have damaged it. The mouthpiece inserts slightly more now, but it seems more secure. I didn't want to modify this mouthpiece, as it is THE ONE for my playing habits and abilities, and it fits everything else the way it should (Olds mouthpieces that I've tried don't work as well for me.) I keep the tuning slide all the way in, and his modification hasn't changed how this trombone plays, so I'm happy with it. An Olds mouthpiece will go in slightly farther now, also with no noticeable effect.

Let's see...

Schilke 60 (Morse taper) on my P-24G (my main horn)

Curry 3M on my R-20 Recording (on the rare occasional I get to play it)

Olds G on a couple different late 1940's Olds doubles

Olds 21 on my O-25 (with Bach inners) and my S-20

Wick SM3MX on my late 1930's Olds double (medium shank)

Thanks for all this great feedback. I love Marcinkiewicz rims and was thinking of trying one, but didn't want to risk it if it would stick out too far.

If for small bore, Marcinkiewicz ET4 Ulyate model has a shorter shank that fits the smaller Olds quite well.

Thanks! Actually looking for one to fit my Opera, so kind of between 4G and 5G-ish.

I use a 9 on my King 2B and love it.

Ken,

I have a Marcinkiewicz ET4 Ulyate and a Marcinkiewicz ET3 Loper. Each of mine appears to have a standard small shank, and neither slides into my Olds Recording receiver as far, or as wobble-free, as an authentic Olds mouthpiece or a Doug Elliott Olds Shank. You can use these mouthpieces, but ...

That’s interesting… i have both the regular ET4 and CH ET4 and they’re both a hair shorter than my ET3,even if you look at the Marcinkiewicz specs list, the ET4 shank is shorter in length. They’renot to the extend of Dougs or Olds, but still enough. Neither my ET3 or ET4 had any wobble though.
