Unique, cheap, vintage

Title says it all. I'm looking for unique vintage horns. I love collecting but I have far too many trombones that just look the same. I'm looking for something that stands out from the rest of the usual, at an affordable price of course.

How unique? I have a 38h Connstellation from ~1954/5. It's a 500 bore, like the 48h, with those little gussets on the braces, but a smaller brass bell (7.5"), and integrated counterweights. $800. There's one on eBay, but it doesn't have an original slide. Plays well. Overall good condition. No lacquer.

How about a Conn 2H? Pretty unique ... with a bore smaller than most trumpets and made with metal thicker than a '57 Chevy Bel Air. I have one, complete with a serviceable original case that can be yours for a reasonable offer. Actually plays pretty nicely even if the slide is showing it's age (but still very usable). :good:

The Olds trombones from the 20's with the trombone-playing bear engraved on the bell and tuning-in-slide are decent playing horns that still seem to be plentiful and go fairly cheap. (I have one, but it's not for sale).

No, it's all round tubing. Just my bad photo skills. The neckpipe has some finish wear.

I have a fairly large collection and would like to reduce it. These meet your description best...
1956 Reynolds 72-X Philharmonic bass trombone. Great playing single bass with a copper bell. "Tangerine" model.
Holton student model with G-attachment
2005-ish Romeo Adaci single bass. Handmade instrument by German maker. Mint.
1937 Conn 30H Burkle model. Dual-bore, small-bore tenor. Mint. Slide 10/10.
Mirafone valve trombone. Medium-bore, piston-valve trombone. That is right.
1970s King Duo Gravis bass.

It's not bad photo skills; it's unintended consequences. I like the effect; it's kinda like an Escher in photographic form.

The Conn 44H was a pretty interesting design with the angled deco braces and a sharp edged bell with no rim wire. Real sizzle to the sound, Willie Colon played it on some early Fania albums if memory serves. Usually you can find them in decent condition between $400-800, although pristine examples with ornate engraving can go for more.

I have a 1928 Conn 22H in great condition....really small bore.
Exchange rate with Australia is good for you at the moment so could do a
reasonable price.

1. The Schuman was my thought too. Good idea but not practical to have such a slide when space often is the problem
2. The Getzen "The Dude" is another strange horn. Ugly.
(None of these two are in my collection)
3. The "Courturior Conical bore" is a rare bone and rather useless even though the idea is good. I have one that I got cheap, it has probably not been played much. I have not seen many of those.
4. I have two Conn 60h C-trombones that I found on eBay in 2013, just a couple of numbers apart. Both are playable. I have not seen many of those either.
5. A "Keefer" trombone. Probably very rare. Not very expensive.
6. Get a real old horn. I found one Conn from 1902. Not very playable but interesting. That's a "peashuter" with .458 I also found a King from 1904 with 6" bell. Both very cheap but completely useless except to use as wall-hangers.
I have others but they were not as cheap. I really miss the old forum when it comes to old instruments. It was a joy to read about ANY instrument at that site. Many of the people who contributed are not around anymore. It is a shame we can not get that database.
