Holton TR-183 "George Roberts" .562 slide, single rotor f-attachment, 9" red(rose) brass bell (it is a true Holton bass bone flare) Great for small stuff, big band, pit work, etc. There is a small dent, in rotor knuckle(picture), extremely small acid bleed at rim(picture,it won't show in picture) Really that's it. Horn passes, as new. Comes with a heavy Holton case. (not original, but very good condition.

I have used Stork 1.5s light weight and Yamaha 58L. I tried my 4g-ish large tenor 'piece, this thing can soar. Blends well, with tenors, when needed. Yamaha 58L is included. (I have a New Stork 1.5BT (heavy)) I'll sell for $55.00 extra

So either a, small Bass or very large tenor. Sweet horn. My needs have changed, so time to move some equipment.

$1,500.00 + shipping US only

Note: I'm new, to this forum. I was on tromboneform.org for years. I must not be approved for up loading pictures yet. email me, and I'll send some out. THX

:? Am I that far behind the times? A bass trombone with a 0.562" bore is a "small bass?" :idk:

How does its sound compare with a "big bass" (whatever that is) to someone listening with their eyes closed? :???:

The 9” bell and single rotor push it toward small-bass territory. The bell throat may or may not make it closer to tenor or bass, as well.

In this day and age when guys are increasingly using .562/.578 dual bore and .578 straight bore slides, the old standard straight .562 bore basses are starting to get considered “small” in certain circles.

I get that some bass trombonists have gravitated toward tuba-sized 0.578 bores. Too much for me or any ensemble that I play in - unlikely that such a monster instrument would ever blend.

But please explain how a second rotor makes a 0.562" bore bass trombone any "larger." (With your eyes closed, that is!)

It doesn’t, but to many people, “listening with their eyes”, it’s going to be a small bass.

Regardless of size, these old Holtons can be fantastic instruments.

Thanks, Pompatus, for helping make my point. Some of these old instruments - even those with a single valve - make great sounds - if you listen with your ears!

Happy to help!

I apologize, for the detour, etbone. It sounds like a great horn. Best of luck with the sale!

I played a concert, as a tenor (4g-ish)mp, 2nd/3rd part. Doesn't get edge on tone, until your are...way to loud. This thing projects. ANd one concert as, only bass. (Fairly advance, civic wind ensemble) It worked, until I needed a very exposed sustained low b natural! (UGH)

Sound is in your head. But horn: projects a focus sound over broad, articulations are very good, slots pretty well

Valve casing looks small, compared to my Bach 50b, but the swoopy knuckles are similar to King. Not stuffy, if you keep the rotor aligned. Thanks for looking and posting.

FYI... I believe this horn was made in the early to mid 2000s. For what it is worth...

I was going off, some faint numbers on the slide. So could be either 96 or 06, didn't want to mislead anyone. It does look new. Plays great.

In the picture, if you look closely....you'll see a Brasslab balance weight (I'm including in sell) I forgot to take it off, for the picture...so it's included in sell. (Actually, it's sized for Bach 42 tuning slide brace. A little plumber's tape, and it'll fit Conn, Holton, etc)

Here's kid, playing one: <LINK_TEXT text="https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=ge ... &FORM=VIRE">https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=george+roberts+performs+with+holton&view=detail&mid=88E5E7BEEE219960C8B488E5E7BEEE219960C8B4&FORM=VIRE</LINK_TEXT>
