For my 60th birthday last week, my wife gifted me a King 2102; which was a total surprise! I'm not that knowledgeable on King horns - so coming to the brain trust here for some answers.

In tracking down the serial numbers, what's stamped doesn't follow the standard pattern - this appears to have the letter A, followed by 4 digits. She was told that this horn was recently retired from the Airmen of Note. Is it possible this is a custom serial number?

Another question - what finishes were available for the 2102? This horn appears to be all nickel or silver (slide and bell), but isn't marked as a Silversonic - just a 2102. There is no goldwash in the bell.

I'm trying to upload a photo - but failing miserably.

Any information greatly appreciated

Works for me.

Likely it's a standard 2102 (i.e., yellow brass with nickel silver trim) in silver plate.

You should be able to add a photo as an attachment. Anyway, even though you don't see them that often, King 2b and 3b trombones do come silver plated as well as lacquered. If it's all silver, that most likely means that it's a silver plated instrument.

A silversonic 2b in lacquer would still have a brass tuning slide and gooseneck, and when they are silver plated they should have a gold wash in the bell. More importantly is that a silversonic will have a sterling silver mark somewhere on the bell.

The serial number for king trombones is on the curved bell brace. The number you are seeing on the slide brace is the matching number for that slide. You will probably find the same number on both slide braces somewhere.
