King 2B Silversonic mouthpiece advice

Hello there. With this 2B trombone I play with a Vincent Bach 11C. But I feel it limits me a bit. Like it is too narrow and suffocating. And I know that every mouth, lips, teeth is different and I should try it out and I will. But I would like to know from fellow King 2B (and similar) players what they prefer so I have kind of a reference when I am at the mouth piece shop and I can narrow it down a bit beforehand.

For example I found a similar topic on Redit where the replies were mainly that its very common to pair up a 2B with a Bach 7C. So I would like to hear some advice if someone has any! :)

2B is not mouthpiece picky. They work with just about anything.

I currently pair a Denis Wick 7cs to a 60s King Tempo. Got great range, power, and good depth of sound from it. I know Wick pieces aren’t for everyone…the rim is unique. Does well for me though.

Doug Elliot's mouthpieces with the proper shank are amazing. I'd check them out.

Well yeah but the ones I have are not ideal. That is why I ask if other 2B players had similar issues and solutions or advice.

I'm from Holland and they don't sell them here. I really try them out 1st before I buy anything. Holland isn't a big country so there are enough brass shops within driving range. I just want to narrow it down a bit before I am trying 100's of mouthpieces hehe.

I used my Bach 4C on a Silvertone (1947) 2B. Mainly because my other mouthpieces are around 25.9 - 26 mm. Lots of people like the Bach 7C or Wick 7CS on this size horn. I'm sure there are Klier equivalents for you to try.

Anyway I'm going to my local brass shop to try some things out. I always feel a bit giddy hehe when trying stuff that might improve my playing.

The best mouthpiece for any horn depends on the embouchure of who is playing it. I also found the "standard" mouthpieces felt too stuffy. I ended up with a Bach 5 for all my small bores, including my 2B, and it really opened up the horn and even helped my high range. If you can find one, try it or similar sized mouthpieces. Good luck!

Well I went to the shop and tried about 8 different mouth pieces including the 7 and 7c. But for my King 2B the one I already had was still the best. Bach 11C. I think I need to look at a slightly bigger trombone instead. The King 3B I have is very good with a big breathy rich sound but it takes more air too making me a bit too tired after 2 hours of playing. And 2B too narrow. So if I get the chance I'm going to test a King 2B+ or maybe a Rath model with .500" boring.

I feel the 2B design works for a lot of people but do others feels constricting and like it backs up on them; I have myself had that feedback from some 2Bs, like that are "narrow and suffocating" as you describe, especially above four ledger line C.

Other players I've talked to about it agree. I think because the 2B is a dual bore design with rounded end crooks sometimes it just swallows air and doesn't respond the way I expect it to. After I play it for a while it starts to feel better, but I still don't think it centers as well in the high register or feels like it gets the sound out quite as well as other designs.

But some players don't have that problem at all so perhaps it's horn dependent or individual, or both.

For what it's worth I have a Bach I also like on mine. I have an Almont copy (like Tommy dorsey's mouthpiece) that I feel plays amazingly on it. The Almont/2B combo is super easy to get around, nimble, beautiful/lush, and open. But I took it on a gig and I couldn't hear myself at all. The Bach was much more resonant.

I play a DE setup with my 2B Silvertone, an LT 101/C+/D2.5. I find it slightly better than the same rim/cup with the D3, so although the horn isn’t overly picky, it does make some small difference, not as much as the player/chops, we’re talking the last couple of % or so.

As it happens I’m in the Netherlands on business next week in Arnhem. If you can easily get there you’re welcome to come and borrow the DE setup and a couple of other pieces I sometimes use on the 2B Silvertone to try them out, as long as you drop them back off before I leave!

The rim on the DE setup is a lot larger than the sorts of pieces you mentioned but perhaps a wider rim is also worth thinking about, works for some people, not for others.

I'm using a DE setup on my 2B SilverSonic.

Rim: LTn103 (like a 4G) / Cup: LT C+ / shank: D2.5 or D3 (depends what I'm playing)

Great match for the horn. Another consideration is to try removing the counterweight and see what difference that might make to you and the way the horn blows. Each 2B would be different...some like it on, some like it off

I had a King Silvertone for a while. I found a Schilke 47B worked best for me. About the same rim diameter similar to an 11C, with a larger throat. I was able to move air without it “backing up” on me.

I play something 12C sized on my Tempo. Works.

IMHO, the backup or resistance feeling really depends on the mouthpiece rather than the horn itself. Cup depth and shape mostly.

I was also happy with a Schilke 47B when I played a SilverSonic (sadly no longer available to me).
