Bill could play the stuffing out of that tune, but I actually think he was having a pretty rough night on that recording, and you can tell he's not happy.

To my mind, Dick Nash gave us the rendition to admire. Old fashioned vibrato, but just absolutely wonderful playing and interpretation. Like melted butter. :)

Yeah, I love Doug's performance, but not so much the big band arrangement. I didn't include it because I didn't think it would be fair to put Doug through the comparison with Watrous and Nash, especially when the context is so different.

I think Doug comes out pretty well. He's a great player.

I always admire Dick Nash for this unbelievably huge almost classical sound. Watrous is fascinating of course but compared to Dick the sound is much more muffled and not as full/open as Dick. Wondering if Dick played this on the Williams 8 that he played for a while. But on the other hand, he sounds like that on all the Mancini records. So, as always, it's likely not the equipment ;)

There is NO Best version, They`re 3 different wonderful trombonists interpreting a melody

really dislike putting a sport mentality into music. This guy is the Best ever. It`s only a matter of personal choice.

If we heard Joe Allessi, Toby Oft and Jay Friedman play Rochut #1 . They would all be fantastic. Not one better than the other.

Just my opinion

Well said. I always say that once you get to a certain level, there’s no such thing as “better,” there is only “different.”

Hi again .

Hi Dukesboneman !

Well , saying that A is BETTER than B do not means that B is BAD ... means that , in relation to our personal taste , we prefer a thing over another .

Of course , these can be both marvellous things ; but , for same reasons , there is a strong preference .

I do not see nothing wrong with that .

I think that one have the right to express what one really feel ...

Anyway , music is also made of "rating" , as sport do .

Why Joe Alessi was hired by the NYP ? Probably because he was preferred over others players , that probably were very- super- good too . So , in my opinion , also at top pro level there is someone who is "better" , not just "different" . Of course , this is always related to someone ( the committee / the conductor / the musical director/ the band leader / etc) personal taste !

Regards

I dunno, man. You like jazz, so tell me who is the best: Jack Teagarden, Curtis Fuller, Frank Rosolino, or Carl Fontana? For me the answer is all of them. They're all fantastic players who are great at being who they are. No one else does what they each do better than they themselves, and they're all different from one another. I can't pick a best or a better. One's not better than the other, they're just different.

But I love what you're saying about being able to say who we like. Thanks. I'm going to try to do that from now on; say I like a certain player better, rather than saying this person is better than that other person. I think that's far more accurate than using the vague word "better," anyway. Better at what, precisely? But "I like Bob better than all those other guys" is much easier and true.

Hi again.

I think that we cannot say who is "the best" among Teagarden , Fuller , Rosolino , and Fontana , because they were soloist performing in too much different stylistic points of the Jazz history . We can compare Rosolino and Fontana ; I love both , but in this case I would say that I prefer Rosolino . So , in others words , I find Rosolino a " better" jazz soloist .But Fontana is also fantastic , of course !

I do not like too much to descend into the realm of euphemisms . I think that what matters are the concepts .

"Better" is not a offensive way of expression ...

"Better" , I guess , means something that is more interesting , more attractive , more pleasant , richer in meaning , etc . It is an impulse trasmissed by our senses ( hearing) , to which it is not possible to lie.

Of course , is personal-related to our taste . Not an absolute truth !

However , if by magic the players you mentioned above went to be resurrected for only an evening , and I had the chance to listening to just ONE of them , I would choose to listen to Jack Teagarden .
