I was going through my Bedside set of drawers that I keep all musical related things in, and came across a Full set of Original Gary Greenhoe Slide Braces I bought years ago that Gary made for Ralph Sauer to try and replicate a sound on his 8H to that of an old Conn Alto trombone ( TIS ) circa 1916 that Ralph had played on Beethovens's 9th Symphony.

Ralph and Gary Greenhoe worked together to design this small brace to gently nestle in between the hand slide tubes near the end crook. The weight is negligible, but the response is astounding. Projection and stability are improved, helping you to create the classic orchestral wall-of-sound brass timbre. For a time the LA Phil trombone section had matching "braced" slides.

I don't know how many sets of these were produced, but know that M/K Drawing do a copy of these but not sure how they compare to these originals.

Three sizes were commercially made to cover the following are available:

Narrow - for small bore trombones with narrow slides: King 2B, 3B, Bach 12, 16, etc.

Medium - for Conn 8H, 88H, 62HI, Getzen Bousfield, Shires T25, T47, Yamaha 882O

Wide - for Bach 42, 50, Conn 62HCL, Getzen 3047, 3062, Edwards, Shires TW47, B62, Yamaha 882OR

I don't know why I bought these, I buy all sorts of old Conn related stuff, so probably thought these would be safe with me as a full set :lol: but never used these so I might be looking for a new home.

I was wondering if anyone ever used, or uses these now and if they are they really as effective as claimed.

I have had both, and while very similar, they aren’t identical. The MK drawing braces are solid and the Greenhoe’s are hollow. I can’t remember if they played different or not

I use one, and have used it on several trombones. It really does change the perceived feel and the slotting, which will change the sound. They were marketed as great additions to lightweight slides, but I’ve almost always used mine on standard-weight brass slides. For me, they really lock in the valve registers.

The Sauer Brace turned a really good Conn 62H bass trombone into a fabulous instrument. However, its effect upon a King Duo Gravis and a King 8B were a "dud". Draw your own conclusions -------------------

I use one on my 42BO, on the F attachment slide.

The open wrap F attachment slide is the same size as the Bach 12 hand slide crook.

I feel that it helps stabilize and give more punch to the lower notes
