I wonder what "and limited obligation to 2nd trombone" means. Does 2nd trombone have a contract where they get to occasionally play principal?

Not sure how big their section is there, but some opera orchestras have a larger section (5 players is often what I've seen). Not everyone plays every opera, and since the 2nd chair is the one where there's not a duplicate (co-principals on 1st and bass) other players may need to cover that chair at times to equalize the workload.

Still, that makes sense that with 2 Principals, there might be a need to cover the 2nd part occasionally, or when there are 4 parts in a larger opera score.

It being a European opera orchestra, the most likely setting is:
1. Prinicipal
2. Principal with obligation to play second. (Easily aroud 50%of their workload would be second)
3. Utility, playing 2nd and bass
4. Bass with obligation to play CB.
