I remember hearing awhile back that the JJ Johnson and Kai Winding charts were available somewhere. I can't find them. Does anyone know if this is true and, if so, where I can get copies of them?

Thanks. :)

Great Kai and JJ transcribed sheet music | Alessi Publishing https://share.google/HMg8g8V5nvcLHXKCe

You can buy some of those here. I've transcribed about 20 pieces for a concert I played a month or two ago together with Klaus Heidenreich from NDR Bigband. They are pretty easy to transcribe actually, so I decided to not spend as much money as I would possibly get for the gig

I purchased that and can attest that it's a very good transcription and worth the money as it also has transcriptions of the solos too.

If you're looking for the J&K+6 stuff though, which gets lumped together because the CD release of that included the LP of The Great K&J as well as the K&J Octet recordings, it is unfortunately NOT included. Interestingly, both albums have a totally stacked set of players:

Artwork – Arnold Roth

Bass – Milt Hinton (tracks: A2, A3, A5, A6, B2, B3, B5), Ray Brown (tracks: A1, A4, B1, B4, B6)

Bass Trombone – Bart Varsalone*, Tom Mitchell*

Congas, Bongos – Candido Camero* (tracks: A1, A4)

Drums – Osie Johnson

Piano – Hank Jones

Producer – George Avakian

Trombone – Eddie Bert, J.J. Johnson, Jimmy Cleveland, Kai Winding, Bob Alexander*, Urbie Green

For what it's worth though, the Octet stuff is actually pretty easy to transcribe. Although I've admittedly only transcribed the Night in Tunisia from the soundtrack, the way that Kai's part is mixed, he sticks out like a sore thumb in stereo at 50% speed, so it's really easy to figure out the note of the top voice.

Also side note, I know JJ was basically a genius at writing but now that I've transcribed it, WOW there are some things that sound really, really impressive that are actually very simple to play. Just an all around magnificent arrangement done by him.

Aha! Thanks! I had completely forgotten that Bob Elkjer transcribed a bunch of things, including these. Thank you! :) (I don't really want their transcribed solos, just the charts, but this is great too.)

I transcribed six of the duets. Happy to share them with you.
