<I>edit 5/6/19-- I have been traveling and working, so this has taken a back seat, but I did list it on Craigs List for $900, or best offer. Someone who plays in a local symphony tried it out, for himself, and for some of his students, and felt that it was fairly priced for its condition, which is very good. I was glad to hear a little something of what was hidden within. Again, thanks for all your help and information in this posting. Drew 919-923-2521 Chapel Hill, NC. </I>
This is my first post, I understand that I have to get two posts approved before I can PM or post photos.
I picked up what appears to be an excellent condition trombone in a local thrift store. My goal is to get some information about it. I am not a musician. I did read a little bit on here before I posted.
It is in King B3 concert model, with some orchestra material dated 1980 in the case. Serial number is 707757, and the slide number is 5319. Benge 12C mouthpiece. Three different Humes and Berg mutes. Gold finish, large bell, with two tiny dents in the top tube. Slide is silky smooth, falls right out when tilted at an 8 o’clock to 2 o’clock position. Overall, appears to be a well cared for instrument, unlike the trombone my daughter had in middle school band.

Pictures would be nice, but you need two approved posts to be able to post them.
I assume you mean a King 3B. The 707xxx serial indicates somewhere before 1980 but after 1970.
Are you looking to sell it? Do you want an approximate value?

Nice find! But careful, thrift trombones can be habit forming...

Yes, King 3B. I will eventually sell it, or donate it. I am 70 years old, no musical talent, so there is no chance that I am going to play it.
You are right about the thrift shop habit, I hit it every day.

Can I load photos directly from my iPad to this post? I see the “attachment, add files”, below the reply box, and I can compose a list of photo attachments, but I do not see an upload button.

King 3Bs are very nice, high quality horns. I can narrow it down to between 1975 and 1980, probably late 70s. The 3B is known as an "all purpose" small bore horn, suitable for jazz and concert bands. Surprising that orchestra music was with it, maybe it was played in a high school orchestra. That horn should sell for between $500 and $1,000, in my opinion, based on the description.

This is the only photo that will load, at the moment. Looks like I am going to have to resize my photos.

Looks like you can only post one photo at a time, which is a PIA.<ATTACHMENT filename="ABA6BB45-50C3-44E2-ABE7-1B38D991DD96.jpeg" index="0">[attachment=0]ABA6BB45-50C3-44E2-ABE7-1B38D991DD96.jpeg</ATTACHMENT>

Two tiny dents, between the base of my middle finger and ring finger, are the only ones that I see anywhere on the instrument.<ATTACHMENT filename="1D42225B-6ED0-413C-84E8-4476DF22239C.jpeg" index="1">[attachment=1]1D42225B-6ED0-413C-84E8-4476DF22239C.jpeg</ATTACHMENT><ATTACHMENT filename="D15C08F7-1986-4192-86A2-AF540A531D94.jpeg" index="0">[attachment=0]D15C08F7-1986-4192-86A2-AF540A531D94.jpeg</ATTACHMENT>

It was a high school band program in the case.

That looks like a good find! I hope you find someone who'll use it/take good care of it.

That horn looks just like mine -- it's a great horn! Yours is in better shape than mine, though. :good: The case looks good, too. It's handy that it can hold those mutes or other stuff. I'm sure you'll find a buyer for it if you want to sell it.

Slide lock looks fine. You have to rotate the part by the mouthpiece over the lug on the slide. Nice horn, worth more than $500 IMHO.

You have scored a gem. The King 3B (yours was made about 1978) is a professional-level trombone, used primarily in jazz, salsa band, big band, concert band, ... settings rather than orchestral. It appears to be in very good condition for a 40-year-old instrument. Worth well more than $500. :good:
You have also found, in TromboneChat, an excellent place to display and sell this treasure.
Good luck!

Thank you for all the feed back. I guess the next step is to get a hands on appraisal. I am in the North Carolina Triangle(Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill), if anyone knows someone in the area.

I have a 3b from close to the same era, but mine’s a little older. I got it appraised for insurance purposes and it was appraised at $1800. But I would never sell it for that much. I think 3b’s should be in the range of $600-1200 depending on condition. I’ve noticed, on this forum, they sell for around $650-800
If you go to eBay and search “King 3b concert” and filter by “sold items” you should be able to get a good idea of what these sell for.

The problem with a hands-on appraisal is that the value is almost always too high! Great for insurance purposes but it will set you up with unrealistic expectations. The bottom line is that your 3B appears to be in great shape and is from a fairly good time period. These generally go for $600-$1000. Yours might be nearer the upper end of this range.
But the absolute best course of action for you is to take a few lessons and start playing! No musical talent or experience needed. Fun, fun!

Either that or get your daughter to start playing again and give it to her. :)

I'd love to have one of those lyres (funny shaped things with square hole at bottom). I have a 3b silver sonic from high school that is missing the lyre. Would you sell one?
