Has someone tried the schilke symphony D5.1? Does anyone know what is the difference between that and the schilke 51? Do you recommend changing from one to the other?

For what it's worth, the D5.1 is just a bit deeper than the 51; slightly different contours of rim, cup, throat, and backbore. Feels a little bigger, but really, pretty similar.

Are you unhappy with your 51? What do you want changed? The D5.1 is not a magic bullet that will suddenly improve your trombone playing. If you want to experiment, try one - you may like it. Mouthpiece preferences vary from one player to another - tastes are very individual.

I have a 52, but I am looking for smaller mpcs, I would also like to try the Griego 4.5-5.

LOTS of options in that size range. But either of the Schilkes would be a great choice to try.

To me the 51 is brighter and a little clearer/zippy. D5.1 is darker and the rim is a little more comfortable.

I just tried a D5.1* today on a conn hh8t and couldn't put it down. I know this is an old thread, but I liked the mouthpiece a ton. The music store owner said within my first note the projection I was getting was drastically improved. Felt free, comfortable and easy on the chops.

Just to second Euphman06's words: I have to play tenor trombone at the moment - bass is just too much in that band, since the other two trombones are small bores - and have been working on tenor stuff with my large bore / Thayer-instrument. I bought the D 5.1, because on my bass I use the D 6.0 - love it! - and wanted something with a similar feel.

Revelation!

The sound is just incredible compared the the DW 6 BL I used before. But I run out of air sooner on long notes below the staff than on my basstrombone... In this "little big band" I have to play first, second and third trombone, depending on what the others can't do. I have used the D 5.1 for half a year now, so I think the honeymoon is over, but everydays life is a joy.

High range ist ok up d". Nobody needs more..., at least I never will..

I know this is not really helpful for anybody but myself... Just wanted to say...
