1) Yamaha 356R. 500/525 dual bore brass slide, f-attachment, 8" red brass bell. It has some minor dings on it, but a good playing example that still looks decent despite some lacquer wear. Slide action is good with no chrome issues and the rotor is fast and quiet. Low register is really good on this one. Comes with original case in good condition. SOLD

2) Yamaha 353OR. Essentially a straight version of the 356. Japanese-only model. No chrome issues on inners. Slide action good. Fully interchangeable with the 356. A couple of minor dings. Comes in original slimline case. $325 shipped.

3) Yamaha 646. 525 sized horn. 8.5" yellow brass bell. Needs some work. Lacquer is crazing and coming off. Slide action is passable, but could use some work. No case. Compatible with the above horns. SOLD

Pics available. Package deal possible.

I've always been curious about the 356R vs the 646.

Is there that big of a difference between the two? Obviously one is rose brass with an 8" and the other is 8.5" yellow. And of course there's the dual bore vs .525 straight/single (?) bore.

Both of these horns have intrigued me so much. And I've been in the market for a Conn 79h and never knew if these would be a solid substitute. Any opinions?

356r has a lot more zip to the sound. That .500/.525 dual + 8 inch bell is super flexible. I’d wager it gets you closer to a 79H than nay Bach 36 could.

That's very interesting knowing that 356's are student models, which I believe turned into the 446 (intermediate). And of course the 646 is a pro horn. I've always wondered what the gap between horns were like. Maybe I'll just make my own post. haha

Point of information: 446 was based on 646 and is 0.525" bore. 356 is a dual bore.

What number Schilke mps would work on a 356 R.

Has to be small shank. Beyond that, it's more you than anything else. You could use a 15E (Schilke 24) or a 4 (Schilke 52). The larger mouthpieces will work well with the lower register and the smaller ones will help the upper register.

General purpose? Bach 7C, 6.5AL, 5GS (middle of the road) or equivalent.

I use either a 7C or a 6.5AL with my 356G (same as the 356R but with gold brass bell) and it plays magnificently. It's been my regular gig horn with my wedding/events band for at least a year. I'll continue to use it as such until I find a Selmer Bolero with an F attachment.
