In a general sense, it's any time you make your chops buzz a different note than your horn wants to play. Like playing an Eb below the staff on a straight tenor. It's an acquired skill.

On a single valve bass, what are the slide positions for false tone C and B? And, do I play them open, or with the trigger depressed?

I find the best place for the false tone C and B are valve down, a major third below the primary note. In other words, C is the same position as E and B is the same position as Eb.

You will have to find exactly where they are for you.

You play them with the F trigger, and C is approximately in 2nd; B approximately in 3rd (F positions -- longer than Bb positions).
