A facebook friend posted a picture of his dad playing an old horn with a distinctive "stairstep"-shaped neckpipe, where the bell section narrowed slightly just behind the first brace next to the slide. I know I've seen one like it before but can't remember what it was, and can't find a picture like it on Google. Given the date of the photo ('40 or '41) I'd expect the horn to be old. Maybe an Olds or Conn or King?

A lot of 19th century American trombones have this feature, it was a very common design. I have one made by Boston with it, I've seen others by Distin.
Here's a French Besson, so it wasn't strictly an american thing.
