Between the 71H and 72H is one more suited for big band jazz work and the other more suited to symphony orchestra symphony band work.
I'm very lucky in that I live in Cleveland OH but spend the winters in FL. I have a 72H. Checking it through as luggage when we fly is a pain and nerve racking. I'm thinking of buying another horn so I don't have to do that anymore. I play more jazz in Fl. And more legit stuff in Ohio.
If I buy another horn I could leave the one more appropriate in the correct state.

As far as I know, other than the slightly different wrap they are the same instrument.

To me they play different. The 71h and the 73h feels smaller compared to the 70h and the 72h. I don't know what causes this. You could read this thread for some info https://www.trombonechat.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=10697

For what it's worth... I personally feel that while the specs are "identical" on paper I swear the bells between the 71h and 72h are constantly different. The 72h bells usually are pretty thin while the 71h bells are all over the place between paper thin and super thick depending on the era.

Mr. Deacon has an informed point. I owned a modified 72H and currently play a modified 71H. My 71H bell feels a bit heavier compared to the 72H. The biggest difference is my 71H slide crook has been changed to a holton crook.
That being said, i was asked to try a 72H slide with my 71H bell section and it changed the sound. It gave my 71H that bite that 72Hs are known for.
So my humble opinion, aside from stating the obvious that the player affects the sound, the slide crook can affect the sound just as much. I think if the rest of your setup is the same, the difference between any of the 70 series Conns should be negligible.
