Picture Size

Brian, how big do you want pictures to be at their maximum? I temporarily bumped it to 10MB. Your server could fill up fairly quick at that size but then again, that isn't TOO unreasonable. Thoughts?

Well, I don't remember how much space we actually have access to. I'll look it up.

It'd be nice if we had an auto-conversion capability to downsize uploaded stuffs.

That might be possible. It might also make sense. We only have 20GB at the moment.

How much of an audience are we potentially alienating if we only allow externally hosted images?

Probably a significant amount. Everyone wants it easier, and the less tech-savvy posters might get frustrated quickly.
One of the strong points of our site is that it's easy to do stuff, at least ostensibly. We're trying to be responsive to peoples' requests, etc.
What's the cost of acquiring more space for images?
SiteGround can bump us up to 30GB for $6ish more per month but that is also not much space. We should probably look into the imgur or other remote hosting site options. Or check with SiteGround to just buy more space. It isn't like hard drive space is particularly expensive these days. Especially spinning disk.

$72 a year for 10GB more seems rather gouged. Can you get price options on buying more space?

Either way 10MB seems rather high to me for web JPEGs, but I maybe clouded by the hellish overhaul I am currently overseeing of the NMM's 150000+ file media collection. The number of hours I have watched batches of TIFF consolidation flash before my eyes...

Why not make a 1MB limit? Seems reasonable. Then, when we get closer to running out we can upgrade.
Auto-conversion option would be sweet.
Also, like I mentioned before, there is an Imgur plugin that links to a single account (which I've already created). TromboneChat has the account and all uploaded images upload there via an installed Imgur button. They all upload to our account. Seems smart.

I think that probably makes more sense than anything else. The only thing about that that I don't like per se is that we don't have total control over the images. If Imgur goes under... well, there's some really valuable information potentially we'd lose!
Let's talk with SiteGround and see if there's anyway around their... interesting... limitation. We have quite a high bandwidth, it wouldn't be inconceivable to mount a remote cloud storage option somewhere and use that for imges.

If we periodically download the Imgur album I can back everything up to my NAS.

Oh right, because it would all go to a single account. I like that.
