I think that's the base for the decorative (counterweight?) Rath "[color=#800040]R"

IIRC, that threaded part on the bell section is actually for replacing the valve section for a straight neckpipe. It's still a modular trombone, after all. The R3F and R4F have that as well.

Isn't the decorative "R" logo on the tuning slide? (On all other Rath horns, that is...)

How is it different from the R4F? Bore size?

The modular valves, instead of having two cross braces, have a single screw that holds on the upper portion of the F attachment. It's a pretty clever design in my opinion!

Seems like there was an earlier post on this that said the difference between this horn and the R3/4 was that the valve was made in-house rather than using a Rotax. Don't quote me on that, though. It's not even listed on their web site yet.

Yes, I was one of the testers...... Fantastic instrument.

Valve is Mick's design.

More rounded crooks.

New stay not used on the R4F.

They are selling really well :good:

This works with the existing R3/4 slide?

I bought one a few months ago, it's a fantastic horn but the valve takes a little bit to get used to. The throw is slower than a rotor or Thayer valve, so at first it was a little clunky for me. The valve also has a kind of backpressure when activated that feels a little different, for instance if my face is on the mouthpiece ready to go and I move the valve back and forth without blowing air I can actually see my cheeks go in and out. I've never experienced this before though I've heard Greenhoe horns have this effect, though I haven't had a chance to play a Greenhoe. (Can any Greenhoe players confirm this?) The valve is very open and has a great low range, I mainly play bass trombone and I feel right at home playing below the staff.

Oh wow, that definitely is pretty interesting. I notice that the tuning slide and the valve tubing now both have cross braces. The previous Rath models had unbraced tuning slices, and just a single brace in the middle of the valve wrap, which attached to the bell using that knurled nut.
