How tough a job is it to remove the sleeves from a Conn
6H slide. Thinking about making the slide lighter of course.
Would it make sense to search for good 5H tubes and swap?

In my opinion it's kind of tricky, but if you get the right person it should be no problem. Of course you're essentially rebuilding the slide, so probably won't be cheap.

I have a 6H from 1965 with a lightweight slide, marked 6H LW. No oversleeves. According to the outer slide weight comparison list it is 214 grams.

Perhaps it's worthwhile to search for one of those factory-made LW slides instead of converting a normal slide?

FWIW, I'm replacing the outer slides on a Getzen 3062. I recently purchased it online and it came with red rot. I got a good deal on it and my tech only quoted me $200 for the unlacquered tubes and labor. I'm getting brand new outer tubes from Edwards. Do get them lacquered he quoted me another $100. So $300 total.
Also, I believe there was a 6h for sale with a 5h slide here on the forum. I'm not sure if it sold though

Brads correct about you're basically getting your slide rebuilt.
How light do you want it? Depending on that you may not have to screw with both tubes. Switching spit valves and and crook gard could lighten it enough.

Thanks for all the tips. There are lots of options here. I doubt there’s too many factory 6H LW slides floating around in great shape. I’ve seen a couple 5H’s. Lots of 48H’s. Those are built without sleeves I gather. There’s always the CF option for $800. I appreciate all the help on this. Most likely will avoid removing sleeves. Don’t want to risk messing up a great slide.

My 48 has sleeves, but they are lightweight. The sleeves are nickel silver colored, but they may be integral extruded sleeves that are plated to look like separate pieces. It's hard to tell.
