Recommendation for something like Rochuts

What are some other etudes that are similar to Rochuts in terms of style--melodic, legato, etc. Technique-wise, something around Rochuts book II. I have the Ervin duet book for book I, which is good, but looking for something not directly derivative but rather with just the same feel. Maybe even some jazz etudes for trombone or something.

I love the gérard pichaureau 30 recreative studies. not as hard as his other books, but in kind of a nice French impressionism style.

The various and sundry Tommy Pederson books. Some are OOP, while some have been reprinted. All are melodic etudes in a more modern style.

The Brad Edwards "Lip Slur Melodies" book might float your boat. You can kill two birds with one stone.

the giuseppe concone 15 vocalises are pretty nice. you can get a free version on imslp but transposing or reading treble clef 8vb will be required, or you can order a trombone version from hickeys or a few other places

Besides the Concone, the Art of Phrasing from Arban's can be used. Again it's public domain if you can read treble.

Lyrical Etudes for Trombone - Phil Snedecor

Nice melodic etudes, around the same difficulty as Rochut book 2 or 3. More modern harmonically, but still very tonal and not too "out there". Nice change from Bordogni - in tenor clef throughout.

Copyright says PAS Music, but the selling agent is Robert King Music. I'm pretty sure Hickeys still carries it, which is where I got it a few years ago for $7.95

The Cimera are not technically difficult but can be played in different ranges to add a challenge. Plus they are just plain nice melodies.

Studies in Legato (etudes by Concone, Marchesi & Panofka) edited by Reginald Fink. A little simpler than the Bordogni/Rochut but nice melodies and fun to play.

I also like the etudes in the Blazevich Clef Studies. If you don't want to deal with alto and tenor clefs see if you can find Blazhevich Advanced Musical Etudes [in Bass Clef] (Fink) or the version for tuba, Vladislav Blazhevich, 70 Studies for BBb Tuba (2 volumes) published by King.

Due to a severe case of pandemic-inspired boredom, and wanting to play something new, I ordered some of the recommended music. Between not having everything in stock, and substantial USPS delays in delivering Media Mail, I finally nevertheless have received everything I ordered on April 14.

My thoughts:

§ Pichaureau – 30 Récréations en forme d’Études (Alphonse Leduc)

30 études in 19 pages – for $30.15 + $5.95 shipping from Hickey’s.

In other words. some are very short! They seem very clearly French conservatoire.

To me, many of these études are not very interesting or fun to play. OK, but not inspiring.

Not a great value. :idk:

§ Concone – 15 Vocalises, Opus 12 (Alphonse Leduc)

26 pages of music. $18.10 + $5.98 (bundled) shipping from Sheet Music Plus.

More challenging, musical, and interesting than Pichaureau.

Printing quality is not too good – clearly reproduced from a photocopy.

Reasonable value. :shuffle:

§ Snedecor – Études for Trombone (PAS Music)

20 études, all in tenor clef, in 31 pages. $20.00 + 5.95 shipping from Hickey’s

Varied key signatures, time signatures, and tempos within these 20 études.

Interesting, just challenging enough, and fun to play. My clear favorite! :good:

Get the Michael David Bone Kill book. More fun than a barrel of monkeys and darn hard to play anywhere close to the marked tempo.
