So what does a sterling silver leadpipe do to your sound compared to yellow brass?

Thanks!

I find it adds a bunch of core to the sound, makes things slot a little harder, a bit less color, and narrower. On my current horn my Edwards 2SS just makes it sound brittle and almost nasty at times, but that pipe works on other horns. If the horn works with it, it can be a very predictable response.

If you get an unobtanium leadpipe I heard you can play like David Vining.

This is what I needed. I have read some different things. Obviously it’s to each their own, but this is the first response I can understand and relate to. My bass is super lightweight so it “shimmers” earlier than I’d like. Just making sure SS didn’t darken the sound any. Because that’s a pretty penny to drop. Will probably go with bronze or red brass!

Thanks

I agree with Aidan as well. I want to add that while I didn't like having a silver pipe in my horn when in use with a plated brass mouthpiece, I did use one when I was on a Giddings steel piece. I found it balanced the more "dull" sound I got on the Giddings (less overtones, "shimmer", compared to brass), added some ease overall to playing, and added a bit of something extra that I liked. I found I also had an easier time blending with other sounds on the steel piece, when I combined it with the sterling silver leadpipe.

I use sterling silver leadpipes (Shires 2SS, Edwards 2SS and Shires B1.5SS) exclusively with yellow brass bells. For red or gold brass bells I prefer yellow brass leadpipes.

Does sterling silver last longer against being deformed from taking the mouthpiece out and putting it back in X decades?

Longer? I don't know about that. My Edwards SS pipe feels softer, but I've used it for a couple of decades now without making a mess of it. Of course, I don't jam my mouthpiece in there and beat on it either.

Cheers,

I wasn't being rude or nasty.

I was just pointing out that these type of discriptions are subjective/nebulose/personal.

(In australia hell doesn't have the same impact as in the US.....we were founded by convicts  )
