60H. To add a valve or not to add a valve.

So i recently came into Conn 60H bassbone. It's the second non 70 series bass i will have ever owned. It's a fixer upper to be sure and will most likely be disassembled to be thorough in its resurrection.

A while back i bought a D valve from a old 62H. I'm thinking while I'm having the horn rebuilt why not add a valve and essentially make a 62H.

Thoughts? Opinions? Slander?

Thanks?

Those are becoming exceedingly rare. I'd let it with one valve and give it a careful restoration.

Or maybe I'd sell it to myself :-)

Yeah, I'd do it. A second valve, particularly from a 62h would be right at home on a 60h. (Putting it on as a dependent, right?) Improves the usability and value of the horn. We're a little over run with single valve basses in my opinion. I think it's a win all the way around. And then you can sell it to me for $500. That's a great idea! :D

Is that the tuning in slide version? If so, if you add a second valve, dependent only. Cut down that J-bend and there's no going back.

It would be dependent. It makes sense with the design and I'm not a fan of independent system horns.

I got a 60H earlier this year and though I have the Conn valve and tube to make it a double, it will remain a single. A single Conn 60H is a thing of deep joy. I have open wrapped the valve and have tube to put it in Eb, but I have a wonderful double, so I can indulge myself in having a single.

If it's your only bass, and you use it much, add the valve. If it's a second bass then how much do you use it and for what? It can be nice to have a single trigger horn for when you don't need the second valve.

I use a modified 71H for my primary. I got a 72H i need to fix up and was going to add a valve to that, But was talked into leaving that a single. I've never owned anything like a 60 series bassbone before. I'd like to had a back up dbl trigger horn. Since I'm having it rebuilt from the ground up i need to make a decision. Right now the rarity of 60Hs gives me pause in making this a dbl trigger.

Is it the one that quin recently listed ? If yes do what you want.....he wouldn't ship to the UK, otherwise I would have bought it for parts.Just use Conn parts...especially the valve....it does make a difference if you want it to sound and feel genuine.

It is. And yes the valve is a Conn valve.

But where to get that second valve?

Just got a new double trigger so I think I leave my 60h as it is. But In case of putting on a second valve, where to get it? I’m thinking of selling my 60h since I already have two 70h. But I have to do a chemical cleaning first.

I had a CONN D valve from an Elkhart 62H i bought and was going to use, but i don't need it now since I'm in the middle of purchasing a Minick Elkhart 62H from a friend. So I've decided not to mess with changing the 60H and instead to try restoring it.

The 60Hs slide crook was destroyed so I'm toying with putting a MK Drawing crook on it and pulling the leadpipe since I'll have the 62H slide to work with. If i can't find a valve cap (since it didn't come with one) i might put an Olsen valve on.

Lots of ideas but little money.

I also have a 72H bell i need to add a valve or 2 to.

After these projects I'll be pretty much set, aside from needing an altobone and a bass trumpet.

I'd say no to the Olsen valve and the MK crook....it's not that they are bad products but will change the horn. Stick with Conn stuff.

I feel you. I want to keep it as original as i can. Curiosity is causing me to look at other possibilities.

I've put Holton , Bach and Shires rotors on old Conns...none of them worked well with the basic instrument. Conn valves and tube...job done. They are fussy about slide crooks too.

Since you have the matching equipment on hand already, definitely go for it.

Have someone good do the work!

Agreed on making it a dependent horn (I play a 70's 62H).

Think about how you want the second trigger to be designed. I had mine reworked years ago. The old factory original triggers (side-by-side paddles) reduced the ease of operating the valves.

Having never owned a 60 series horn i would have to heed your advice. I have modified, or gotten already modified, my share of 71/72s. The modifications done, i felt, actually improved those horns in my opinion. With the 60H tis slide, and it's J bend, any modifications would be drastic.

So i guess I'll have to fight the urge to chop the horn up.

Unless it's a pos. If it's a pos I'm modding the piss outta tvat horn. :P

If you really want a second valve, make it a plug-in. I did that on one I had years ago and it was so nice not to have the second valve in for the majority of situations where I didn't need it. It's probably not going to be much more convoluted than building it in. It's probably just illusion, but to me a good 60H is a better horn than a 62H.

John Sandhagen at the Boneyard has suggested that on occasion since he has a couple of Kanstul plug in valves. But as stated in a couple of posts ago adding a second valve now is moot since I'm getting a 62H. And i think the purists out there would be happier if i kept the 60H as stock as possible. Frankly so would i.
