New Yamaha trombone

Back in mid April Yamaha released a new large tenor trombone in Japan, the YSL-825. It was designed by Akira Kuwata, principal trombone of the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra.

The wrap is very interesting. Almost like their V-valve wrap. (Patent number US6255571B1 if you want to see a drawing of it.)

Definitely on my list of interesting horns and valves. I can imagine that the manufacturing is more difficult than a normal rotary due to the strange port arrangement.

I’ve got one of their V valve horns that I wouldn’t sell for anything. It almost plays itself, but is definitely not suited to the American “as open as possible” palette. I’d best they don’t sell this one here for the same reason. Look at Oft’s comments.

That definitely is an interesting wrap. I wonder if it's based on keeping the air flowing in the same direction around the bell section idea.

Unless I'm reading this wrong, this is a 6k+ Yamaha. Possibly a good value in Japan (I wouldn't know) but it's a bit more expensive than a Shires and even more than the Edward's model with a rotor.

The wrap is really odd. I see no advantage of having the lower valve port feed the branch going up, and the upper valve port feed the branch which starts going downwards. I see that both branches need an additional 90 degree culing around to achieve this, which is not good per se, but cant see the advantage of this wrap. Please educate an ignorant mind ...

My guess, based on the 882V I’ve got, is that they’re trying to make the F section feel more like Bb side, instead of trying to make it feel more open. The 88HCL did the same thing…it fogs up the Bb side a little so it feels more like the F side. With the valve ports in those positions, I bet you’re going to make the longer F side feel smaller, despite the larger bore and valve ports. Just my guess though.

I just saw the new 825 Yamaha. Looks beautiful. Lots of material combinations in common with the Alessi trombones, minus the unsoldered bead. Right down to the interesting outer slide combo.

Apparently the valve is a French horn valve. I got to hear the owner play it, and it is a new horn for them. Very compact sound with lots of core. Sounded pretty powerful. They said it was very different from the xeno 882.

Unfortunately the only colored brass trombones I have currently seen are by Venus, and they aren't in the same universe as Yamaha.
